Acts 2:42-47 (ESV)
[42] And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. [43] And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. [44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common. [45] And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Talk About It
After Jesus went back to heaven, His followers became the first church. They learned, ate meals, prayed, and helped one another. The Bible says they were “devoted” to prayer—prayer was really important and they did it together often! They didn’t just pray alone; they came together to talk to God as a group.
When the early church prayed, God did wonderful things—people felt awe, miracles happened, and everyone shared what they had. This shows us prayer isn’t just talking to God by ourselves; it’s also about talking to Him together at church and at home. God loves when we come to Him as a family or as a church—He hears and answers those prayers!
Let’s remember: Prayer brings us together and invites God’s help. We can pray for our needs and for others. When we pray with others, God makes our hearts generous and joyful, just like in the first church.
For Parents to Explain
Dear God, thank You for letting us pray to You and for always listening. Help us remember to pray together and to care for each other as Your family. Amen.
Family Activities
Prayer Circle
- Sit together in a circle and hold hands or gently place a hand on the person next to you.
- Each person shares one thing or one person they want to pray for.
- Go around the circle as each person prays out loud for their request.
- Finish by thanking God for hearing all your prayers as a family.
Answered Prayers Jar
- Find an empty jar and label it “Answered Prayers.”
- Whenever God answers a prayer, write or draw it on a small slip of paper and put it in the jar.
- At the end of the month, read through the slips together and see how God has worked.
- Thank God for His answers and remember to keep praying as a family!
